Awards honour student achievements

Two students at Neilburg Composite School, Leah Timmermans and Kristen Schmidt, were recipients of the Credit Union Award for obtaining the highest mark in Math/Science. Both received a $1,000 scholarship.

Two students at Neilburg Composite School, Leah Timmermans and Kristen Schmidt, were recipients of the Credit Union Award for obtaining the highest mark in Math/Science. Both received a $1,000 scholarship. Val Bossert, manager of the Marsden branch of the Synergy Credit Union, presented one of the awards while Dale Lysitza, interim manager at the Neilburg branch, presented the other.

Principal Worman presented the Spirit of Youth Award to Leah Timmermans. This award is given to a student showing leadership ability, a co-operative attitude, good academic standing, and who participated socially, academically and athletically in both school and community activities.

Drama awards went to Skyler Bossert and Lauren Evanger as the Best Actor and Actress in the school plays. Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow also presented Adam Bisson and Dayneeka McCulloch with awards as the Best Supporting Actor and Actress. The Boarding House was selected as the Best Play for the 2010-2011 school year.

Mr. Wade Worman presented the Dallas Ball Memorial Award for dedication in sports to Dayneeka McCulloch. Worman also presented the Gross Award for 3-on-3 Volleyball Supremacy to Kelly Muskego, Mr. Volk and Mr. Gieni.

Worman gave the Junior Volleyball Most Valuable Player awards to Kody Smith (boys) and Laura Hegel (girls). Mr. Gieni presented the Most Valuable Player awards for Senior Volleyball to Arlee Walde and Chase Smith (boys) and Sam Williams (girls). Kasey Schmidt won the Junior Girls Basketball award.

Miss Waldorf presented the Doug Park Track Award to Alex Foster for the commitment and dedication he has shown to the sport of track and field.

Mr. Wade Worman announced that Coleman Tyler was selected as the Male Junior Athlete of the Year. Kaibre Watson was the Female Junior Athlete of the Year. Worman also presented the Senior Athletes of the Year with the Elsie Edwards Memorial Award" Lukas Biensch was the male recipient, while Leah Timmermans was his female counterpart.

Principal Worman presented the Deportment Award to Lauren Evanger.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow presented the joint valedictorians, Kristen Schmidt and Leah Timmermans, with the Valedictorian Award. Tanner Scott took home the J. S. Palmer Scholarship. Martin Smith presented a $200 ACCESS Scholarship to Leah Timmermans.

Leah Timmermans placed fourth in the Allan Craig Scholarship competition. To win these awards, a student must have an average of 80 per cent (or higher) in social studies and must submit an essay on the topic of politics or economics. Kristen Schmidt received sixth place in this year's Allan Craig Scholarship.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow presented a Student Youth Apprenticeship scholarship to Reed Putnam.

The last award of the afternoon was presented to the Outstanding Student of the Year. Principal Worman made this presentation to Christine Watson. She also made a presentation to each of the Grade 12 graduates.

The results of the election for the upcoming Student Representative Council were also announced at the conclusion of the award presentations. The new president will be Skyler Bossert with vice-president, Shannon Putnam. Dayneeka McCulloch is the secretary and Dustin Hafner is the treasurer. Mikayla Watson is the member-at-large. Ryley Olchowecki will act as the intramural coordinator and Landon Watson is the new sports director. Ashlee Goodfellow is the social club director and Kasey Schmidt is the fundraising coordinator for the 2011 - 2012 academic year.
