It's back to the past for the Battleford parade.

This year's parade will return to its former route, last used in 2012.

Since 2013, the parade has been forming up at Fort Battleford, but this summer it will move back to the track by St. Vital School, according to a decision by the local recreation board.

From the track, the parade will move past Court of Queen's Bench on to main street, continue on to Central Avenue, on which it will travel to 1st Avenue by Town Hall and on to the Queen's Hotel on 25th, then back down to the track.

The start up time will be the same as usual, 8 p.m.

"We're taking registrations for the parade and donations for the fireworks," said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jordan Schechtel Monday during Battleford's town council meeting.

The fireworks will be held at the same location as last year, west of Fort Battleford, Schechtel added.

Councillor David George, parade marshall, said it may make sense to omit the Central Avenue section of the route if entry numbers are down.

"It just gets too long and people get spaced out too much," he said. "If we are down to 70 floats again it might be an idea just to hook a left at Penny Dale and come this way [toward Town Hall]."

The parade is to take place Friday, July 15. This year's theme is Salute to Our First Responders.

While the route and time for this year has been set, there has been talk of moving the Battleford Parade and fireworks to another date in the future, perhaps to align with Northwest Territorial Days.

The Battleford Parade has traditionally been held on the same weekend as the annual Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival, which has been held in Battleford since the 1970s.

This year's Handcraft Festival runs July 15, 16 and 17 at the Alex Dillabough Centre.
