The Jan. 22 council meeting started off on a high note with Brian Grest being awarded the Canada 150 award as decided by the City of Humboldt.

Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek MP Kelly Block tasked the city with choosing one citizen for the award who has, “given a contribution to our community in the year of Canada’s 150th birthday,” says  Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench.

“We wanted to give it to someone who wasn’t just involved in one thing. (Grest’s) name came up as being involved in everything from Arts Humboldt to the Carlton Trail Ski club to coaching.”

Grest is also involved with Street Fest, the Humboldt and Area Refugee Coalition, and the event for Tim Thibault.

Muench said during the meeting that Grest is always the first one there promoting event and organizing.

When asked why Grest is so involved in community events, the answer is really simple, says Grest.

“It’s about giving back to your community. Why wouldn’t you?”

The rest of the council meeting included a public hearing regarding a new electronic sign going up at 310 8th Ave. proposed by Viking Benefit Solutions.

As per the sign bylaw, new electronic signage must be brought forth to council.

The sign has been approved by council.

City Manager, Joe Day, also presented a verbal report regarding the 2018 budget documents.

A preliminary budget has been brought to council in preparation for the Jan. 29-30 budget meetings.

Councillors will have the opportunity to examine the document and make note of any concerns that they will be bringing to the meetings next week.
