Charges laid after fatal crash

Charges have been laid after a fatal collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian near Moosomin First nation Sunday afternoon. A 17-year-old walking on a main grid road was struck and died as a result of his injuries.

Charged is Melvin Swiftwolfe, 45, who appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court Tuesday. He is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and driving while suspended.

WPD Ambulance responded to the noon hour crash on Grid 679 40 kilometres North of the Battlefords. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was one of five to collisions, two involving wildlife, responded to be ambulance crews over the long weekend.

A Ford Escape and a moose collided at 10:30 p.m. Friday 20 kilometres west on Highway 16. Two people were treated and released by paramedics on the scene.

A deer was hit by a car Saturday at 10:30 a.m. south on Highway 29 towards Unity. An 83-year-old man was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital in stable condition for further treatment.

At noon Saturday, a crash at the intersection of 100th Street and 11th Avenue involved a pedestrian and a vehicle. A 50-year-old woman was transported to BUH in stable condition.

Two 16-year-old girls were transported to BUH Saturday around 4:15 a.m. when the vehicle they were in struck a pole at the intersection nof 2nd Avenue and 24th Street. WPD Ambulance reports the girls were in stable condition.
