Here are some more highlights from the December 12 North Battleford council meeting, the last one of 2012.

Some new affordable housing could be coming to the city of North Battleford, but it will require some hurdles to be crossed at city hall first. Council heard from Mark Hanely, president of Mardi Holdings Ltd., who appeared to request the purchase of five feet of city sidewalk adjacent to 1091-103rd St. This would accommodate suite development in the basement of the building with the construction of window wells.

Council passed a resolution later that night which states it is prepared to consider the sale on certain conditions: that public notice be given, that Mardi Holdings Ltd. provide acceptable designs for proposed improvements, that a satisfactory lease agreement be established with the City, and that Mardi Holdings Ltd. be responsible for the costs of street improvements.

The city is preparing for its 2013 centennial anniversary celebrations. A memo was presented on the subject from Parks and Recreation Director Keith Anderson.

City administration will be represented on the anniversary steering committee by Marketing and Communication Co-ordinator Mike Halstead and Recreation Co-ordinator Siobhan Gormley.

Anderson has suggested the committee be made up of representatives of city council, Battlefords Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, City of North Battleford Historic Archives, First Nations, youth, media and from the community at large.

The scope of the event will be decided by the committee. A total of $30,000 is to be budgeted for the event, which may be used to contract an event planner.

The City has awarded Earthworks Equipment Corporation of Saskatoon the tender for a purchase of a new track skid steer with accessories for $56,267.50 including taxes.

Council also gave pre-budget approval of $4,300 to Director of Business Development Denis Lavertu to attend the International Council of Shopping Centres Conference in Whistler, B.C.

Council meets again Jan. 9.
