SAASKATOON - The Downtown Saskatoon Business Improvement District (DTNYXE BID) has a new executive director.
Shawna Nelson says, “I am deeply grateful for the warm reception received from our staff, board members, and the wider business community. Your support has made me feel right at home, and I am eager to partner with all of you as we begin this exciting new chapter.
DTNYXE BID operates as a non-profit organization that focuses on a range of services to enhance and promote the district. Its new executive director says she has found a strong foundation to work from, taking on her new role as of Nov. 4.
“As I step into this role, I am inspired by the excellent work already done by my predecessor, Brent Penner, as well as the dedicated team at DTNYXE BID and our visionary board,” says Nelson. “Together, we have a strong foundation upon which to continue advocating for and amplifying the voice of business in our district.”
A seasoned leader with over 23 years of executive-level experience in hospitality, hotel, tourism, and business sectors, Nelson is no stranger to the Downtown Saskatoon business community.
“I look forward to reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, listening to your concerns, celebrating your successes, and most importantly, fostering a culture of collaboration as we look toward a bright future. The work ahead will involve not only tackling the challenges that come with a dynamic and growing downtown, but also seizing the opportunities that will make Downtown Saskatoon the place to BE for everyone who invests, works, lives, and visits here.”
Nelson, who has served on numerous boards, including the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Canadian Chambers of Commerce, Saskatchewan Jazz Festival and the Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc., says of DTNYXE BID, “Our mission is clear: to support our downtown business community by enhancing the experience of all who interact with our district. Through strong leadership, inclusivity, and a focus on impact, we will continue to promote Downtown Saskatoon as a strategic business destination. I am committed to ensuring that, together, we continue to build a downtown that is not only vibrant but also a powerful engine for business success. As we work to foster a vibrant and thriving downtown, addressing the challenges of homelessness and ensuring clean, safe, and welcoming streets for everyone remains a top priority, as we believe a secure environment is essential for both businesses and the community to flourish.”
Nelson adds, “Downtown Saskatoon where the beautiful South Saskatchewan River, and Meewasin Valley, provide a perfect backdrop to a vibrant cultural hub, where creativity and community come together in the heart of the city. Whether you're enjoying one of our signature festivals, browsing through boutique shops, or relaxing on a favorite patio, Downtown Saskatoon offers a one-of-a-kind blend of creativity, entertainment, and community spirit that makes it truly special.
“By combining all of our strengths, we will advance initiatives that elevate the downtown experience and amplify our collective voice. I look forward to collaborating with you all on new projects and initiatives, confident that through our shared efforts, we will continue to position Downtown Saskatoon as the premier location for all things business and beyond! Taking Care of Business!”
