The family and wife, Natasha, of RCMP Cst. Derek Pineo, who died in a collision involving a moose near Wilkie early July 20, has released a statement.
"What Derek personally stood for could be viewed in his interaction with his co-workers and the people he took an oath to serve.
"His passion for the job was addictive, his heart's priority to was to keep the roads safe for all from traffic to putting a stop to Drinking and Driving.
"Derek's heart was so against drunk driving that Natasha's wish is to have stronger laws and penalties imposed in honour of his memory, his work and his passion.
"Because of his strong family values and beliefs he participated in many RCMP community policing projects like the PARTY Program, elementary school liaison program, bicycle roadeo, and was the spokesperson for many topics within the schools. Derek recruited for the auxiliary program in Nipawin and RCMP in general. He was instrumental in the organization of the snowmobile safety program and the bicycle patrolling police program for Nipawin. He was a dedicated youth mentor and a huge influence to everyone he met.
"Most people do not appreciate or recognize the degree of sacrifice and dedication that police officers make daily until the loss of one such as Derek robs the community of the effects of that dedication.
"His parents would like to express their concern and communicate to the public the effect that domestic abuse has on the entire community as the words of the following verse are no clearly demonstrated then in this time of loss."

"The police call that ended with Derek's life has had a rippling effect to more then just those involved in that call.
"Derek was a family man, community minded, who lived his life to the fullest and gave 110 per cent in whatever he participated in. His passion for the job was addictive to those who served with him.
"The impact Derek has made with his short time with the RCMP is only a small reflection of his passion to serve others.
"His life is a true example of his desire to serve and protect."
