A fuel spill caused major delays Tuesday morning at the Battleford Road and Highway 16 bypass.

The incident happened at around 5:50 a.m .according to North Battleford RCMP. Emergency personnel responded to a diesel fuel spill from a semi-tanker trailer near the North Battleford Superstop.

According to North Battleford Fire and Emergency services, the tractor trailer unit had a damaged saddle tank coming from the cardlock fuel station on Battleford Road where it had stopped. Approximately 300 litres of fuel leaked from the tank.

As well, police say another fuel spill was also reported at the Co-op Bulk Fuel Station in North Battleford and it appears this second leak is from the same tanker.

According to the fire department the driver of the tanker noticed the damage and stopped the unit, blocking Highway 16.

City works department and the Ministry of Highways used sand to contain the fuel to the road surface.

Highways and public works crews used heavy equipment to clean up the contaminated sand for disposal as per environmental guidelines.
