The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70 North Battleford is expecting about 250 delegates from throughout Saskatchewan and the northern United States as the host of the 47th Biennial Provincial Convention.

The legion is looking for volunteers to fill various roles for the four-day event beginning Oct. 18.

Among the roles to be filled are tour guides, selling raffle tickets, serving lunches and shuttle services.

To this point there has been some response to the calls for help, but with the event being far away, Marilyn Clark, the convention chairperson, thinks people aren't rushing yet.

"It's not until October. I think people are sort of sitting back and saying, 'Well, maybe I'll wait until September,'" she said.

The event, which takes place every two years, has never been held in the Battlefords before. It gives delegates the opportunity to discuss the future of the legion.

"The biggest thing for us is the lagging membership and getting people re-interested in joining the legion, because it's a great volunteer group and we work with the veterans," said Clark. "There's a whole new bunch of veterans coming home and they have to be looked after as well."

A meet and greet at the branch and registration will take place on the night of Oct. 18. The day after, Saturday, is when the event really gets started. An opening ceremony will be held at JPII, followed by a parade from the branch past H.D. McPhail Park. Another ceremony will be held at the cenotaph before going back to JPII where the convention will take place with meetings and elections.

A banquet with local entertainment like a children's choir is on the schedule for Sunday. The legion is looking to involve Girl Guides, Brownies and Air Cadets to a certain extent as well.

"We're just so proud and excited to be able to do this and show people what the Battlefords are about," said Clark.
