LLOYDMINSTER – Luke Dean - who alleged held a man hostage - wants a trial by judge alone.
On Monday, 29-year-old Luke Michael Dean elected to have a preliminary hearing and a trial by judge alone in Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench. A preliminary hearing on charges of forcible confinement, extortion, assault with a weapon, robbery with a weapon, and uttering threats, is scheduled to begin April 14 in Lloydminster Circuit Court.
Dean was charged in connection to an incident in July 2020 when RCMP received a report that a victim was allegedly confined to a residence on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster and assaulted before he was able to flee.
Dean is also charged with failing to appear in court and breaching conditions. He failed to appear in court in October for a preliminary hearing and a bench warrant for his arrest was issued. Yorkton RCMP arrested him two days later and he was remanded in custody at the Regina Correctional Centre.
Dean was also out on bail when he was arrested Jan. 26, 2021, by Lloydminster RCMP for breaching release conditions by being in Lloydminster. Police had responded to a complaint of suspicious activity in a hotel room and when they arrived they located Dean.
He remains in custody and was denied bail after being released two times prior.
The Crown is proceeding by indictment against Dean, which means more jail time if convicted. The charges against him haven’t been proven in court.
