Man shot near Brightsand Park

One man is in RCMP custody and another is in a Saskatoon Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body following an incident in the Brightsand Lake area Thursday afternoon.

The wounded man, a 51-year-old resident of the St. Walburg area, drove himself from the scene of the shooting to seek help at a residence 15 kilometres away, according to RCMP.

The shooting occurred approximately five kilometres north of the Brightsand Lake Regional Park entrance.

The injured man called RCMP for assistance and when officers from St. Walburg, Turtleford, and Glaslyn Detachments responded, he was transported by ambulance to North Battleford. From there he was sent to Saskatoon for further treatment and RCMP describe his injuries as serious. His name is not being released by the police.

Friday afternoon RCMP charged Robert Johnson, 46, who was arrested soon after the shooting. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and two counts of using a firearm in commission of an offense. Johnson, who is also from the St. Walburg area, will appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court, Feb. 13. He remains in custody.

Involved in the investigation are Turtleford RCMP detachment with assistance from North Battleford Provincial GIS unit as well as the North Battleford Forensic Identification Section and the RCMP Major Crimes Unit out of Saskatoon.
