Four goals in the final 31 minutes lifted the Melfort Mustangs to a 6-2 win over the Humboldt Broncos in both teams’ final Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League contest of 2017 in Melfort.
The Dec. 22 contest saw the Mustangs turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead with four goals in less than 28 total minutes.
The game got off to a solid start for the Mustangs as former Bronco Andrew Thompson scored his tenth goal of the season at 9:35 to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
After Logan Schatz scored to pull the Broncos back into a tie with his first of two goals on the evening, Carson Albrecht scored his 12th of the year to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Schatz pulled the Broncos back into a tie with his second of the night, and 16th of the season, while shorthanded at 7:21 of period two.
The Mustangs wasted little time after the Schatz goal pulling back in front as Colin Schmidt scored his 12th of the year less than two minutes later.
Reed Gunville would add his fifth of the season just over seven minutes later to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead through two periods of play.
The Mustangs would add two more in the third as Thompson scored his second of the night, and Tristen Elder added his seventh of the season to give the Mustangs the 6-2 win.
Special teams were a struggle for the Mustangs despite the win as they finished 4-for-5 on the penalty kill, and 0-for-5 with a goal against on the man advantage.
Hunter Arps picked up the win in the Mustangs goal, turning aside 25 of the 27 shots he faced as the Mustangs outshot the Broncos 35-27.
The Mustangs will now enjoy 14 days off before returning to action on Jan. 5 when they visit the Estevan Bruins.
