Photos: Moosomin FN fire causes elders to be evacuated

9,600 acres burned or burning.

MOOSOMIN FIRST NATION — There are currently three fires happening in the west, northeast and east areas of Moosomin First Nation.

The northeast fire is eight km long, says Sheldon Fox, communications co-ordinator for Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs, which is helping out on the First Nation.

Fox said an estimated 9,600 acres have burned or are/ burning, and elders have been evacuated.

“The City of North Battleford fire department is out here and are moving to Saulteaux to assist the SPSA (Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency) to help with controlled burns; in case the winds become unpredictable we can prevent the fires from reaching Saulteaux community, says Fox.

Moosomin First Nation thanks to Co-op for donating lunches and water to all the firefighters and delivering it themselves.

Fox says the BATC staff are helping with making lunches, and offer a big thanks for everyone who is and has been assisting with the fires from the start.

Yesterday, BATC was calling for assistance.

“The conditions are hot and dry, with constant winds causing issues for suppression efforts. There is an urgent need for more resources to contain the fire, and an evacuation plan is in place if necessary.”

“If any of your viewers or readers are able to help, they can contact Steve Vandall at 306-980-5573. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and volunteers should keep track of their expenses but check in with Steve before helping to determine the location needing help,” said Fox in Wednesday's release.
