June 16, local residents will have an opportunity to support a charity that has, for the last 12 years, raised awareness and funds for prostate cancer through motorcycle, snowmobile, watercraft and ATV rides.
The Motorcycle Ride For Dad had humble beginnings, starting with simple words from a Kingston, Ont. man. Charlie Pester said "if I had gotten checked this time last year, I wouldn't be planning my own funeral today."
When Garry Janz heard these words, he was moved to raise awareness and funds for the fight against prostate cancer. With a member of the Ottawa Police Association, Janz organized the first Ride for Dad in Ottawa in 2000. The first ride attracted 80 motorcyclists and raised just over $20,000 for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre.
Today, the Ride For Dad includes 30 cities across Canada, over 100,000 men, women and children, and has raised over $9,000,000 to fight prostate cancer.
The only ride in Saskatchewan takes place in Saskatoon, but North Battleford is having its own event in co-ordination with the Ride.
Saturday, June 16, North Battleford will host the third annual party event supporting the Saskatoon ride.
From 3 to 4 p.m., participants are invited to meet motorcycle riders. Awards will be presented from 4 to 5 p.m. and a community supper with entertainment will follow. Bob Leslie, a comedian, will perform and Len Jeffries will deliver his personal testimonial. All events will take place at the Gold Ridge Centre.

Mark's will also host a barbecue at their store Sunday, June 10 from noon to 3 p.m. with proceeds going to the Ride for Dad.
