After a fundraising effort, a $19,000 surgical microscope used to insert tubes into the ears of child patients is now at the Humboldt hospital.

HUMBOLDT — A brand-new surgical microscope used by ears, nose and throat doctors has arrived in the Humboldt hospital after a fundraising effort by the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation.

Lorrie Bunko, the foundation’s executive director, said she was excited to see the new microscope as it will offer a new service for child patients.

“It is a new service that will be offered to children for the insertion of tubes in the ears. It's a very popular procedure amongst young ones,” she said.

“The surgery is going to reduce a tremendous amount of travel for families throughout the district to larger centers, so it's very exciting.”

The microscope cost $19,000.

It was in June that the foundation made an appeal for donations for the new piece of equipment. In September, Wayne Kunz and Stacey Fowler presented the foundation with a $15,000 donation aimed towards getting the microscope.

Doctors are still waiting on some specialist tools and the resumption of normal operation of the operating room before they can use the new microscope.
