An 85-year-old man is dead following a collision between a car and a propane truck north of North Battleford.

The collision happened on Highway 4 north about three kilometres north of the city around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services.

The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was initially trapped in the automobile. Emergency crews were able to free the driver from the car, but unfortunately the driver was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the fire department.

Police say an investigation into the cause of the crash continues.

North Battleford Rural RCMP initially reported they expected traffic to be disrupted on the route for several hours. The fire department reports that city bylaw enforcement officers were called out to the scene initially to assist with traffic control until the RCMP were able to take over that responsibility.

The fire department noted traffic in both directions was rerouted around the accident scene for an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene. The fire department had responded with one fire apparatus, two firefighters and one deputy chief.

In addition to police and bylaw enforcement, EMS were on the scene..

Weather conditions were seen to be a major factor, with strong winds and reduced visibility on Highway 4 and on other roads across the province.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the RCMP. Those with further information are encouraged to contact the Battlefords Rural Detachment at 306-446-1720.
