New Democrat candidate Marcella Pedersen has publicly offered her congratulations to Rosemarie Falk on her re-election as Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster.
Pedersen ran a distant second with a little over 11 per cent of the vote, over 23,000 votes behind Falk. In a statement on Facebook, Pedersen thanked her supporters and expressed her pride in what she said was a people-focused campaign.
Her Facebook statement reads as follows:
“I want to thank my family for the sacrifices they have made. Thank you to my supporters and volunteers for the confidence, energy and trust you’ve invested in me and this campaign that pushed us to the finish line stronger. New Democrats don’t have big money donors behind us like other parties, and so we rely on people and shows what people power is capable of achieving. I am glad I ran on behalf of the people. Democracy is better served when local people step forward. I want to congratulate Rosemarie on her victory tonight.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished. It’s more important than ever that Canadians have someone ‘in it for them’ and we’re going to stand up for people, for students, to fight so that everyone has a place to call home, to take on cellphones and internet companies, to take on big pharma, big oil companies, to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry and put Canada on track to meet our Paris climate targets; to make sure the super wealthy pay their fair share.
“Even though I won’t be going to Ottawa, I’m proud of our work and to put people at the heart of our campaign. We put climate change and Indigenous issues on the map. Our fight doesn’t end tonight, it is just the beginning.
