Proposal to manage handi-bus and public transit under one roof

The Battlefords Transit Committee has a vision for North Battleford's public transit system, and presented it at Monday's city council meeting.

Handi-Bus Transit Manager, Al Love, presented the committee's recommendation that he be responsible for the operation and management of the public transit system, as well as Handi-Bus operations.

The committee made their vision clear, that the present environment within the Handi-Bus operation would have a positive effect on the image, management and service that is desired by the City in a general public transit system.

The committee pointed out there would be cost savings to the Battlefords Hand-Bus operation by sharing expenses such as insurance and rent, resulting in the reduction in costs of Handi-Bus service to the town and city.

Priorities would include having an office and phone service that would allow for the sharing of information to the public, a graphics package that would be incorporated onto buses to create a positive image of public transit and equipping each bus with radios and GPS equipment so transit would always know where their busses are.

The committee would also adapt fare parity between city transit and transportation for the disabled, meaning that fare costs would be the same for everyone.

Council seemed accepting to the proposal that was brought forth and agreed to further discuss the opportunity in the future.
