HUMBOLDT — David Rowe is known around Humboldt Collegiate for his devotion to teaching and love of corny jokes. It’s that devotion that earned him a division-wide excellence in teaching award.
“It's humbling to be called up from such a wonderful staff and a wonderful division of excellent teachers,” he said when he was presented with the award at the Horizon School Division’s celebration day on Aug 28.
“I’m no better than you guys in the audience. It’s just someone took the time to nominate me, so thank you very much.”
Rowe graduated from Luther High School in Regina in 1985. He worked a few years before going to the University of Saskatchewan for his bachelors of arts degree, which he earned in 1991. During that time, he was a player for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, and he was training as a receiver.
He received his bachelors of education in 1993 and then interned at Yorkton Regional High School. After that, he worked at the school in Pangman before moving to Humboldt Collegiate in 1997.
“Throughout his years David involved himself in many leadership positions in his schools... and in our province,” said Cory Popoff, Humboldt Collegiate’s principal.
In Humboldt, he’s been a scoring leader for the assessment for learning, reading and writing assessments; has been the English department head; has coached track and field, wrestling, and football; managed the basketball team; is the provincial exam chair for English Language Arts A30 and B30; and is a member is the Saskatchewan professional development unit, acting as a provincial facilitator for their literacy team.
“This is not a comprehensive list of all the things that David Rowe has accomplished so far in his teaching career,” Popoff said.
The principal said Rowe’s ability to bring learning to life with real world connections and his own personal stories make his classes enjoyable and entertaining.”
“Our students, past and present, really love Mr. Rowe and his caring approach to teaching and learning,” he said.
“David is a valued staff member, professional in every way, loves his family, his students, staff, school and community. Congratulations and a well-deserved award Mr. Rowe.”
