SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department’s rescue unit successfully extricated a person inside a commercial recycling truck. The incident happened on Monday, Nov. 11, as the truck completed part of its route on Clarence Avenue and 8th Street.

A short time later, the driver noticed a person in the back with the recycling materials. The truck then pulled off College Drive and parked in the southbound lanes on the 1100 block of University Drive. The report was received at 9:29 a.m.

Upon arrival, SFD’s rescue unit found the driver of a Loraas truck on the scene and the person inside. Rescue firefighters used tools to extricate the person and a rope system to lower the patient out of the vehicle, and the patient was later transported to the hospital.

Firefighters met Saskatoon police officers on the scene at University Drive, where they located the recycling truck. SFD’s rescue team safely removed the individual from the recycling truck at 9:44 a.m. The individual’s care was transferred to Medavie at the scene.

In other news, SFD crews responded to a structure fire in the 900 Block of 20th Street West on Friday, Nov. 8. SFD dispatch received the call at 9:59 p.m. and dispatched several crews to put out the blaze.

The first arriving firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from a storage shed behind the main structure and advanced multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire. A search confirmed all structure occupants were safely evacuated, and the fire was completely extinguished.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters, and the scene was later turned over to a fire investigator to examine the cause, origin and damage estimate.
