The Star City Elks marked nine decades of existence with a cake and a display of memorabilia during their monthly brunch.
“We thought it was significant that the Elk Lodge in Star City was in operation for 90 years and this year was our 90th year,” said Bob Kirkland, a member. “We decided we would put on a bit of a celebration.”
They decided to combine that celebration with the Dec. 17 brunch, as the monthly event sees many come from Tisdale, Melfort and the surrounding countryside. As well, they also decided to mark Canada’s 150th birthday at the same time.
The Elks run the community centre in Star City.
“It’s the social centre of the town, that’s for sure. We have many, many functions in here,” Kirkland said, adding there’s many weddings, funerals, lunches and even auctions.
“That’s our main function in town, is running this. That branches off into trying to have some functions that would make a few dollars for us because our donations are largely to the Fund for Children in Saskatchewan and the dialysis unit in Tisdale.”
Kirkland said the Elks have been involved with the dialysis unit since the beginning and are one of the many organizations that donate to it to keep it running.
The Elks have around 40 members, with 20 active.
As for the future, Kirkland said he’s not foreseeing too much change.
“Just a continuation of what we’re doing. We have our auction and supper coming up here March 10. That’s our big fundraiser.”
