North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services investigated and located a suspicious unmarked compressed gas cylinder in the city.

It was located last Thursday, August 9, in a thicket of trees on the old waste management site by NBFES personnel and by special constables of the Safety and Standards Department.

The fire department says compressed cylinder was found to contain an unknown chemical that could pose an undue risk to anyone who came across it in the area.

The department said that NBFES and special constables removed the cylinder and secured it pending the controlled elimination of any chemicals within it.

In a statement, deputy fire chief Brian Wilson urged residents to continue to be vigilant in reporting suspicious or unusual items such as gas cylinders.

"It is important that people report suspicious or unusual behavior and/or items so that they can be properly dealt with before anyone gets injured or property damaged," said Wilson.

Anyone with further information on this matter or other suspicious activity is urged to contact Battlefords detachment of the RCMP.
