The Unity 2010 Western Canadian Midget Softball Championship Committee was recognized by the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture, and Recreation at their Volunteer Recognition Event in Marshall, SK, April 20. The Committee, nominated by Pat Risling, received the Event of the Year Award in the category of Culture.

The Committee was credited for hosting a Western Championship that received many accolades for its volunteers who went above and beyond to ensure that players, coaches, officials and fans had a memorable experience both on and off the diamonds. A banquet, attended by over 450 people, and monetary returns to the community in the form of a portable public address system and a donation to Unity Minor Ball of $8,000 were highlighted at the awards ceremony.

Cathy Herrick, event chairperson, accepted the award on behalf of the Committee. The framed award will be on display at the Unity Community Centre.

Unity hosted the Western Canadian Midget B Boys and Girls Softball Championships last summer. Nine girls' teams and seven boys' teams from the four Western provinces participated. The Westerns 2010 Committee was made up of 19 volunteers from Unity who looked after accommodations, diamond preparation, a souvenir program, gate admission, opening and closing ceremonies, scorekeepers, umpires, security, souvenir clothing, a banquet, game/tourney statistics, tourney finances and an event website. Viterra was the major sponsor of the Western Canadian Championships.
