Two men are making the trip of a lifetime.
Derwin Clarke from Balzac Alt. and Joe Alexander from Virden Man., are traveling from Eastend, Sask. to Virden, Man. by horse drawn carriage.
“Our grandfather made this trip in 1919 and we thought we would reenact it,” explained Clarke.
The horses and the wagon they are using for the trip both belong to Clarke.
The pair left from Eastend on July 7 at 8 a.m. and hope to complete the approximately 630 kilometer trek to Virden in about three weeks.
“We have lots of time, we’re retired,” joked Clarke.
They stayed at the Shaunavon Rodeo grounds overnight on Wednesday and were back on the road heading to Manitoba early the next day with plans to spend the next night at Scotsguard.
The travellers are averaging about three miles an hour, or roughly 20 miles each day over an eight-hour time period. The two cousins, who make regular horse and wagon trips each year, expect the team to gain speed - up to 3.5 miles an hour - as they settle into the routine and progress towards their destination.
