WATSON — The Town of Watson is gauging community interest in a dog park, following a letter being presented to council with eight resident signatures proposing the idea.

Local resident Trish Prosser-Loehr brought the letter forward at Watson’s last council meeting. She said that as a dog-owner she found that there isn’t anywhere for her dog to safely run in town.

“There’s not a place for people to take their dogs if they don’t have property for them to run free safely,” Prosser-Loehr said.

Rebecca Paszt, a Watson town councillor, has been working with Prosser-Loehr on the initial steps, co-creating a Facebook page to look for support and help to eventually fundraise.

“We’re just very excited to finally talk to the community and see what people are thinking about the idea. It’s exciting to see how many people are interested in it which gives me hope,” Paszt said.

“We are supportive of the idea, but what we were kind of waiting for was to see how many community members would also be on board.”

A location and timeline have not been selected as of yet. Fundraising is expected to be needed to build a fence.

Community members who wish to be involved can contact Prosser-Loehr at 250-218-0158.

“The reason that the Facebook page is up is so that people who are interested in having the park have a way to get together to start a way of fundraising and get ideas on getting the park going – then we can approach council,” Prosser-Loehr said.
