It was a busy weekend for Humboldt Minor Baseball teams as a number of them traveled across the province to take part in provincial championships.
Mosquito AA Tier 4
The Humboldt Mosquito AA Dodgers traveled to Weyburn to compete in the Tier 4 Provincial Championships.
The Dodgers opened the tournament on Jul. 15 with a game against the Meadow Lake White Sox. The game was closely contested but the Dodgers were unable to upend the White Sox losing a close 11-8 decision.
The Dodgers returned to the diamond the next morning for a date with the Swift Current Indians.
The Dodgers came out swinging in the contest as they piled up 14 runs en route to an easy 14-6 win.
The win left the Dodgers with a 1-1 record in the round robin tied with Watrous for second place, with Watrous holding the tiebreaker.
Thanks to their third place finish in the round robin the Dodgers returned to the diamond for a rematch against the Indians.
The Dodgers continued swinging hot bats in the game as they piled up another ten runs as they blitzed the Indians 10-0.
Their reward for the win was a quarterfinal showdown against the host Weyburn Beavers.
The Dodgers bats were quieter than their two previous performances as they failed to reach ten runs but they once again put on a stellar defensive performance as they limited the Beavers to four runs en route to an 8-4 win, setting up a rematch against the White Sox on Jul. 17.
The game was a tight affair throughout but it was the Dodgers who were able to exact revenge on the Sox as they squeaked out a narrow 4-3 win.
In the championship game the Dodgers ran into a buzz saw as they took on the Unity Cardinals who came into the game with a perfect 3-0 record having outscored the opposition 36-9.
The Dodgers were unable to upend the Cardinals in the finals as the Cards continued piling up the runs as they hit their tournament average cruising to an easy 12-2 win.
With the loss the Dodgers claimed the provincial silver medal.
Peewee AA Tier 3
The Humboldt Peewee AA Dodgers traveled down highway five to Saskatoon to compete in the ten team Tier 3 Provincial Championships.
The Dodgers opened their tournament on Jul. 15 when they took on the Melfort Selects.
The game was a high scoring affair as the teams combined for 25 runs but in the end it was the Dodgers who came out on top as they edged the Selects 13-12.
The Dodgers returned to the field later that afternoon for a date with their highway five rivals, the Muenster Red Sox.
After combining for 25 runs in their previous game the Dodgers topped that as they combined with the Red Sox to score 29 runs en route to a narrow 15-14 win.
After enjoying the rest of the day off the Dodgers returned to action on Jul. 16 when they took on the Saskatoon A’s.
The Dodgers offense continued clicking as they hit double digits in runs for the third game in a row, but also gave up double digit runs for the third game in a row, as they pulled out their third straight one run win beating the A’s 11-10.
The Dodgers wrapped up their round robin competition when they took on the last place Regina White Sox.
The Dodgers continued pounding the baseball as they smoked the White Sox 12-2 to clinch first place in their pool.
In the semi-finals the Dodgers took on the Saskatoon Blue Jay Bandits in the morning of Jul. 17.
Defense was once again a problem for the Dodgers as they allowed another 11 runs and were unable to hit their way out of trouble as they dropped an 11-5 decision to the Bandits, which eliminated them from the tournament.
Bantam AA Tier 3
The Humboldt Bantam AA Dodgers visited Regina for the eight team Tier 3 Provincial Championships.
The Dodgers opened the tournament on Jul. 15 with an 8-7 win against the Regina White Sox.
After receiving the rest of the day off the Dodgers returned to action Jul. 16 when they took on the Regina Blue Jays.
The Dodgers broke out the big bats as they piled up 13 runs en route to an easy 13-3 win.
In their final game of the round robin the Dodgers offense hit their stride as they piled up a tournament high 16 runs as they punished the Saskatoon Cardinals 16-3.
In the semi-finals the Dodgers faced off against the Regina Buffalos on Jul. 17.
In a tightly contested, low scoring affair that saw the teams combine for just four runs it was the Dodgers who came out on top edging the Buffalos 3-1 to advance to the gold medal final.
Waiting for the Dodgers in the gold medal final were the White Sox who got there by pounding the previously undefeated Battlefords Beavers.
The Dodgers finished off a perfect tournament beating the White Sox 6-2 to claim the Provincial championship.
Provincials continue next weekend for Humboldt teams as the Midget AA Dodgers travel to North Battleford for the Tier 1 Provincial Championships.
