The Melfort Comets scored early and often en route to a 65-7 thrashing of the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Mohawks on the football field last Friday in Melfort. The Comets scored 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back, scorching Humboldt's defence for 65 points."The boys really had trouble adjusting to the speed of the Comet receivers right from the onset," noted HCI linebacker coach Brian Hinz. "We tried to make adjustments to slow down the speed of the Comet receivers, but could not get our feet set to turn or break on footballs thrown deep." The HCI offence really struggled, as well. "We struggled to get timing, sustain blocks, hit holes hard and get any sense of flow to our offensive game plan," stated Dave Rowe, the receivers and running backs coach. The Mohawks' offence just could not get anything going and was able to only score one lone touchdown in the second quarter on a 25-yard romp by fullback Brydon Wandzura."You know, hats off to the Comets. They had an excellent game plan, kept drives going and executed really well," voiced HCI defensive coordinator Cory Popoff. The Mohawk defence was able to contain the Comets' run game, but could not contain their well-timed passing game. The Mohawks' game plan now is to get back to the drawing board and work at getting better each and every practice on the fundamentals of each and every position. "When you lose by that kind of margin, it is pretty hard to pinpoint all areas of improvement, but the biggest thing is intensity," commented coach Tom Schwinghamer following the blowout in Melfort. The loss drops the Mohawks to 2-1 before they head up to Tisdale Friday to take on the Tornadoes. "We just need to play with more fire in our bellies and it all starts at practice with players competing each and every day," noted Rowe.Game time up in Tisdale is 4 p.m.The Rookie Jamboree scheduled for this past Saturday has been rescheduled for this Saturday at Glenn Hall Park with games starting at 10 a.m. The rookie jamboree is a good development tool for young players to develop under game-like conditions and get valuable repetitions at game speed.Extra PointThe HCI Mohawk Football Program recognizes the efforts of assistant coach Josh Kovach as a member of the Canadian Senior Men's Tackle Football Championship Lloydminster Vandals. The Vandals hosted the championship game in Lloydminster and defeated the Toronto Titans by a score of 25-19. Josh Kovach is a linebacker on the team.
