HUMBOLDT — A team from the Humboldt Curling Club will represent Saskatchewan on the national stage.

Team Gaudreau won the Curling Club Men's Provincial held in Melfort from March 22 to 24.

Jason Schlachter, the team’s third, said he felt complete exhilaration when he knew his team had won the provincial.

“It was our third time at that provincial final and our first win, so we were quite happy,” he said, adding his team has been trying for five years to win the championship.

“We're just happy to represent the Humboldt Curling Club at a national event and we’re really happy to have the green jackets on our backs. Hopefully we can do well in nationals and come back as the champions.”

Team Gaudreau had won four out of five games in the round robin. They then faced off against Teams Hay, Flasch and Grindheim before going up against the Melfort Curling Club’s Team Desaulniers in the final.

“In the final, it was just the whole team playing the best game of the tournament,” Schlachter said. “Everybody made their shots. They didn’t miss very many but we didn’t miss any at all.”

Team Gaudreau won 7-3. In the championship game, they scored one in the first end before establishing the scoring pattern that led to victory. Team Desaulniers scored a point in the second end.

“We gave one, took two, gave one, took two,” Schlachter said.

That pattern continued until Team Desaulniers conceded at the end of the seventh end.

Team Gaudreau is now preparing for the nationals, which will take place in late November. The location of the nationals have yet to be announced.

The team is planning as many practises as possible in the spring. CurlSask is also providing funding that will allow the team to receive coaching from curling champion Pat Simmons.
