The golf clubs were swinging at Humboldt Golf Club (HGC) as the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation hosted their 17th annual golf tournament.
The July 21 tournament was a fundraiser for the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation youth, with money raised going towards recreation activities, and helping to pay to send athletes to the 2017 Saskatchewan First Nations Summer Games in Regina Aug. 6-11.
“I want to see our youth be able to participate in whatever and because of funding restrictions and all of that we do what we can for them,” says Kinistin Saulteaux Nation Chief Greg Scott.
This year’s tournament saw an increase in the number of golfers, with Scott noting they had 64 golfers making up 16 teams.
Seeing so many people come out to support their youth was nice to see, says Scott who notes the most important aspect is teaching the youth the work that goes into making it a success.
“It’s more about getting them to understand that it’s not just having a golf tournament and it just be what it is. They have a big part in making it a success by them putting in the effort and making it a success. That’s one thing I really like about that is just seeing what it takes to hold something like this.”
The tournament hands out prize money for the top three teams, with team FSIN taking home first place and $2,000.
The final two positions were decided in a chip-off as a number of teams finished in a tie for second.
Winning the chip off and collecting the $1,500 second place prize were the Thunder Buddies, with Yellow Quill Deep Woods coming in third and taking home $1,000.
The tournament was boosted by a number of sponsors, who donated prizes for all of the teams, which was nice to see, says Scott, who notes they play a vital role in the success of the tournament.
This year’s tournament marked the second consecutive year it was held at HGC, noted Scott, who said that they decided to move it from Greenwater, where it was originally held to a more central location, as a number of the entrants make the trip from the Saskatoon area.
With the tournament going so well over the past two years, Scott says the plan is to keep the tournament at the HGC.
Scott would like to thank both the sponsors and the HGC for all of their support and says plans will be getting underway shortly for next year’s tournament.
