Local golfers impress on provincial golf scene

Senior and amateur golfers alike have been honing their skills at the North Battleford golf courses and last week they took those skills out of town to compete with golfers from across the province.

In junior golf, the SGI CANADA Junior Order of Merit Tour Championship was underway at the Deer Valley Golf Course and Estates Aug. 25 and 26.

Tyler Wilson of North Battleford was the lone local competitor and held his own in the tournament. The 18-year-old golfer was in a three-way tie for second place and four strokes behind the leader with a 77.

Wilson shot an 83 on the second round to drop him to seventh place. The winner was Mike Boymook of Saskatoon with a 148 two-round total.

This past weekend, other local golfers, Deanna Klusa, Robert Cook, Tim Sletten, Rhonda Seidel, Jim Simon, Anita Simon, Bryce Bohun, Melanie Bohun, Garry Flichel and Rita Flichel, Keith Scherr and Paula Scherr competed in the Saskatchewan Mixed Team Championship at the Candle Lake Resort.

After day one, Klusa and Cook and Sletten and Seidel were the top local teams sitting tied for fourth. Klusa and Cook shot a 40 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine, while their North Battleford counterparts shot a 37 and 38.

After round one, the top team from Saskatoon was at 68 and four under par.

Kathy Ziglo and Ian Larocque held their lead and took the championship after day two with a -8.

Sletten and Seidel finished in seventh at +7. Klusa and Cook was +9 and in eighth. The Simons were +10 and tied for ninth. The Scherrs were +20 and tied for 23rd. The Bohuns were tied for 26th at +22. The Flichels were +25 and tied for 29th.

In total 102 golfers took to the course for the two-day event and braved the crisp fall weather.
