HUMBOLDT, MUENSTER, LAKE LENORE — With depth and a number of strong performances, Humboldt Collegiate Institute finished second at the Horizon Central Athletic Association District Track & Field Championship.
HCI racked up 796 points. It placed behind Strasbourg’s 914. Humboldt Collegiate had 38 student-athletes compete.
“The athletes showed dedication and perseverance during the season,” coach Nicole Unrau said.
At the district championship, student-athletes secured spots for the provincial championships, which will be held June 3-4 in Regina. Twenty-four HCI competitors will be attending the provincial meet.
“Only two have been to this meet previously, due to COVID canceling the event for two years. We are excited for so many athletes to gain this new experience,” Unrau said.
HCI was one of a number of Humboldt and area school track teams to have a strong showing at district championship. Full results can be seen on the Horizon Central Athletic Association's website (warning .pdf). The event was held at a new facility at Saskatoon’s Gordie Howe Sports Complex. Muenster coach Chad Hofmann said was good for the athletes to experience that.
HCI’s Alexus Roach won the junior girls aggregate title at the district meet. She won 200 and 400 dashes and was second in the 100. Roach also placed fourth in shot put.
Teammate Ben Yungmann had a strong meet in the senior boys category. He won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.82, approaching a district record. Yungmann also had other top three finishes with a second place in long jump and a third in triple jump. He finished third in senior boys in aggregate points.
Easton Ottmann won the 400 and 800 junior boys races. He was second in the 1,500. That placed him third in the aggregate points for his age group.
Dylan Smith won both the 100 and 200 dashes for senior boys. Fellow HCI competitor Thomas Ries’s throw of 13.14 meters in intermediate boys shot put was more than two meters past the toss of his nearest competitor. Other Humboldt Schools
Humboldt’s St. Augustine finished sixth in the overall points standings. Alexis Soderhold won the bantam girls aggregate crown. She won the 200 and high jump. The boys 4x100 relay teams won at the peewee ad bantam levels.
Also placing in the top three for the school were: Camden Suchan, 2nd, girls javelin peewee; Cohen Harris, 2nd, boys 3,000 bantam; Brendan Puetz, 2nd, boys triple jump bantam; RJ Mercado, 2nd, boys 200 peewee; 1st, boys 400 peewee; 3rd, triple jump peewee; Jaiden Ada, 3rd, boys 200 peewee; and Ezra Steadman, 2nd, boys 80 hurdles peewee.
Jordan Zazula of Humboldt’s St. Dominic was second in the overall peewee girls standings. She won the 200 and 400 and was tied for third in long jump. Mary Corcoran took first in peewee girls triple jump. In the bantam boys ranks, Liam Zimmerman took second in the 400 and 800. St. Dominic’s 4x100 girls peewee relay was second.
Humboldt Public School’s Luke Manz came in second in the boys peewee 100. Halle Bennett was third in the bantam girls 1,500. Charles Zaluski tossed his way to third in bantam boys discus.
Lake Lenore
Lake Lenore was seventh in the points standings at the district championships. Five student-athletes qualified for provincial. Coach Curtis Strueby said it was a good showing.
“There were many personal bests and top finishes,” he said. “Our team is the smallest it has been in years as we simply do not have a lot of students in our school. So, to still see us competing at a high level is very encouraging. The students worked hard this year … and it paid off. Parent support is incredible. We had so many there cheering them on.”
Claire Moorman topped the intermediate girls aggregate standings. She won four events: 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000.
“Claire works hard. Plain and simple,” Strueby said. “She trains hard. She competes hard. She is driven. And her results are a result of that. She is a leader and a role model already, even only if she’s in Grade 9.”
Andrei Aquino won the junior boys javelin. He came third in discus. Ava Politeski finished first in the junior girls 1,500 and second in 800. Dexter Gerwing took second in the senior boys 100 and the 100 hurdles. Joel Bauml was second in senior boys javelin.
Mogran Stevens won the peewee girls shotput. She was third in javelin. Aiden Yeager came in third in the intermediate boys 3,000. JC Cordero was third in the senior boys 800. Michael Moorman won the peewee boys 3,000, was second in the 400, and third in the 1,500. Mason Strueby came second on the peewee boys 3,000.
Muenster
Muenster School was eighth in points at districts. Seven students qualified for provincials and many student-athletes posted personal bests.
“Just overall happy for the kids that they were able to compete again in a track and field season,” Hofmann said. “We had 48 students total on our track team, 24 advanced to districts and seven to Provincials....all good numbers. We have great students at our school, and they represented themselves and our school very well once again, both on and off the track.”
Dallen Rude outran the competition in the senior boys 1,500 and 3,000. Mckenna Britz won the senior girls 80 hurdles, while Riley Sylvestre bested the field on senior boys javelin. Zoe Gray had the best throw in intermediate girls shot put. Mackenzie Kuervers placed first in the junior girls 800. In senior girls, Paige Wuchner was second in the 80 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Ethan Hinz took second in senior boys shotput. Avery Berezowski was third in senior girls high jump.
Emmett Hogemann won the bantam boys javelin. Kaylee Bernhard won peewee girls 80 hurdles. Ava Thiemann was second in the 200 for peewee girls. Sully Yeager won the peewee girls 800 run and was third in the 3,000. Jayven McNall took third in intermediate boys high jump
