The last two games of the weekend are set to go at Battleford Flats Park at 1 p.m., as the Western Canadian U14 Softball Championship will determine their two champions.
The top two teams will be facing off in the girls’ final as the Surrey Storm of British Columbia will take on the Lloydminster Liners from Alberta.
The Storm, who went a perfect 6-0 in the round-robin, defeated the Liners in the 1 vs. 2 Page playoff game Sunday evening in a dramatic 2-1 extra-innings triumph Sunday evening to earn a spot in the final.
The Liners rebounded from that defeat with an impressive late comeback against the Unity Panthers in the semifinal Monday morning, as they scored four unanswered runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-5 triumph.
The host Battleford Bandits finished in a tie for sixth place in the nine-team field with a 2-4 record and missed out on the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the top two teams in the boys’ event will face off in the finals as the Barriere Bruins of British Columbia will face the Shellbrook Rangers, who are the last remaining Saskatchewan team in the tournament.
Both sides played each other in the 1 vs. 2 Page playoff game Sunday evening as the Bruins, who went 5-0 in the round-robin, stayed undefeated with a walk-off 6-5 win.
The Rangers earned the chance for a rematch Monday morning after a 12-5 win over the Cross Lake Wolves of Manitoba in the semifinal.
A full recap of the finals, along with stories on the Bandits and Panthers’ weekends, will be posted on the News-Optimist website later today.
