EULOGY Glen Mackrell grew up on a farm in the 1930's hunting rabbits and playing with his favourite dog. Glen was the youngest of a large family. His siblings included Bill, Margaret, Edgar, Doris, Hazel, Helen, Jack and Vera. There are rumours that Glen loved to play pranks when he was a youngster and teenager as well. When he was young he enjoyed the sport of curling. In early years Glen worked on the railroad, as a steelworker, and at the wheat pool elevators. He began construction work at the Pyramid mobile home factory in 1973, Then he had a construction company for a few years before working at the Cash and Carry Lumber Mart which later became the Home Hardware. His last job was as the caretaker at the mobile home park in Battleford where he lived. Glen married his life-long love Betty Lou Locheed in 1955. Betty has 3 siblings: Sid, Donna, and Lawrence. The couple moved from small-town Saskatchewan to Calgary where they gave birth to their daughter Glenda in 1956. Keith, Peggy, Larry, and Wayne were born in the Dodsland area of Saskatchewan after the family moved back. Glen loved nature, hunting, and fishing. Many memories with his sons and some grandchildren involve the joy of the outdoors and the thrill of the hunt, or catching a fish. Glen enjoyed going to the wildlife dinners, seeing the animals that were up for the awards, and enjoying the friendship he found there. Glen had a talent for art from childhood when he used to draw cartoons for fun. In his later years Glen began drawing wild animals and scenery. Glen produced many well-loved works of art, many of which he gave to family and friends. Glen enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. The family enjoyed many garden-fresh vegetables. He cared for his yard in winter, spring, summer, and fall. His beautiful yard was full of plants, flowers, and decorations. The grandchildren loved their grandpa. Grandpa Glen's house was full of Christmas toys and displays during the holidays. Little toys that played farting jokes got him to laugh so hard. Glen would sometimes dance a jig and sing a little dum-di-de-dum tune that made everyone laugh, and then he would flash a goofy grandpa grin. Many lovely moments were also spent doing puzzles and playing rummy and other card games. Glen successfully fought cancer for many years and was an inspiration. Glen saw all of his grandchildren in the month of August 2013 and watched football games and shared smiles. Jason, Tyrel, Nicole, Andrea, Ryan, Cindy, Chad, Kristi, Tyson, Riley, Cassandra, Aurora and Silas will treasure the memories that they have. Glen was an amazing guy. An enduring symbol of this man exists in the lighthouse which he designed and built at the village of Cochin on the shores of Jackfish Lake. We will miss our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We will miss our husband, our brother, and uncle. We will all miss our friend.
