SASKATOON – The local construction community in Saskatoon is gathering on March 20 to highlight the importance of mental wellness, resilience and teamwork. Hosted by the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA), the lunch event at Wanuskewin features guest speaker Tyler Smith.
Smith is a survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, winner of the Amazing Race Canada and a dedicated mental health advocate. He inspires others to shatter the silence around mental health, foster meaningful conversations and create safe spaces where everyone can thrive.
“I know how much power that conversation-starting can have. For me, I try to use my story to empower others to really start taking care of their own story,” Smith says. He recognizes that in a male-dominated field like construction, it can be hard to put mental health first. But he also emphasizes how much it affects being fit to work, for both leaders and teams.
He never imagined himself as a public speaker but Smith is grateful for opportunities to share his perspectives after tragedy. “I just want to help. I just want to give back in a way. We received so much love and support. So for me, in a way this is me trying to give back and trying to hopefully make that impact.”
Based in Calgary, Smith always enjoys coming back to Saskatchewan and says that hockey is a big part of the relatability he has with audiences.
“Tyler has an important message of coping with trauma and overcoming adversity,” says Edward Pyle, SCSA vice president. “His presentation is sure to inspire and resonate with teams who deal with pressures and challenges every day on their worksites. Talking about mental health is not only okay, it’s necessary to ensure everyone has access to the supports they need.”
Members of the construction community are invited to attend the event. It’s an opportunity to connect with peers and learn from Smith’s powerful story.
The SCSA’s lunch event with guest speaker Tyler Smith takes place at Wanuskewin on Thursday, March 20 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. There is no cost to attend, but tickets should be reserved online in advance.
SCSA members are also invited to attend the Annual General Meeting before lunch, beginning at 11 a.m. For more information and to register, visit: www.scsaonline.ca/events/agm
