Saskatoon’s cat café vandalized

The window replacement will cost $1,200.

SASKATOON — An unknown individual broke one of the windows of the Purrfect Cup Cat Café downtown, causing distress to owner Sydney Sylvester. Based on the CCTV footage, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Although nothing was taken, as the person passing by responsible broke the first window pane of the facility, Sylvester said the cats they keep in their shop are warm and comfortable. The affected space is the café area.

“We have surveillance footage, but the person responsible was very fast. They elbow the window in a split second and walk off like nothing happened. We have called a couple of companies. It will cost $1,200 for a replacement,” Sylvester told SaskToday.

“The cat room side of the building takes most of the heat, so the cats are warm. However, it is tough to keep heat in our cafe area without the broken window, so it's much colder here than normal.”

In a Facebook post, Sylvester said they had reported the incident to the Saskatoon Police Service. However, due to the extreme cold and snowy conditions, heating the front portion of the café isn't easy.

They hope to have it fixed immediately and have asked for support from social media users who commend individuals or busy businesses that offer replacements.

“Do we have any cat lovers here who work with glass and are willing to help us? Winter is our busiest time traffic-wise, and this window will set us back since we also spent $700 repairing our furnace not even a month ago. We would be incredibly grateful if anyone could help us with any recommendations, services, or donations,” said Sylvester.

She then thanked the community for their continued support in helping find permanent homes for their cats that are up for adoption and their customers. The cafe opened in May 2022.
