Blast from the Past: Hot off the press! Newspaper survives fire

Unity firefighters break the front window of the Press Herald Publications office in an effort to attack a 2005 fire in the building’s front office. Damage was extensive and wiped out much of the computer equipment. The business office was moved to the home of Dan and Lisa Feser in the interim.

50 years ago

Premier Allan Blakeney made a visit to Unity. In his speech, he “pledged to fight for an end to Federal Liberal discrimination against Saskatchewan in resource prices and unfair double taxes on Saskatchewan resources.”

Ron Rissling was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Denzil by Bishop Rev. James Mahoney of Saskatoon. Fr. Ron grew up in Denzil.

The Wilkie and District Chamber of Commerce discussed store hours at their meeting. Thirteen members to one voted in favour of remaining open one night a week.

Mike Leier and Darren Foster each were awarded 10-speed bicycles at the Unity Hockey Association’s windup banquet. The boys had participated in a fundraising skate-a-thon held earlier in the winter.

20 years ago

With a fire at the Unity office of Press Herald Publications resulting in the loss of software containing the Herald’s subscription list, the April 26, 2005, issue could not be mailed out. Instead it was delivered to designated drop-offs around the northwest for subscribers to pick up. A paper copy of the list was recovered and all the names and addresses would have to be manually entered into a computer.

Construction of the grass greens at the Wilkie Golf Course was underway.

The Town of Unity received a grant of $239,386 towards construction of a new waste disposal facility adjacent to the existing landfill.

Jaycie Neil was named Most Outstanding Performer of the Unity Music Festival.
