Hard hitting volleyball seasons for all UCHS teams

UCHS Junior boys' volleyball team host conferences, advances to districts in Medstead.

UNITY – Unity Composite High School has seen its fair share of talented athletes and this year is no different. Currently, all teams are playing well in their divisions with major playoffs in the future.

Coach Ken Parker reported that the senior boys’ team placed second at a tournament hosted by Outlook LCBI.

“Given the size of the tournament and the level of competition, this would be their best finish in a tournament so far this season,” says Parker.

Other tournaments the team has played in have included Wilkie, Medstead, Maidstone, North Battleford and at home.

The SHSAA playoffs will begin Nov. 9 in Biggar with conferences. If the team advances, a trip to Assiniboia for the regional playoffs will take place Nov. 18. UCHS will be host to SHSAA provincial playoffs Nov. 24-25.

“This weekend will bring together 10 of the best 3A schools into one tournament. We hosted in 2021 and the excitement was fantastic right up until the final game,” Parker adds.

Playing host to this magnitude of an event requires additional help from the student population and becomes a school-wide event.

The junior boys’ team has also had a successful season under community coach Jeff Nemish, with hopes to make a run at the Battle West District playoffs. Unity played host Oct. 28 to the Battle West South Conferences, with seven teams vying for the top four spots to advance to district playoffs in Medstead Nov. 2.

The Grade 7 boys’ team is coached by four senior boys who have been working on their skills through regular practices and a few league games. A four-team mini-tournament was hosted on Oct. 25 that welcomed Wilkie, Cut Knife and Luseland to UCHS.

Coach Rhonda Gartner looks after the Junior A team, with 12 girls between Grades 8 and 9. They will be attending the conference playoffs in Wilkie against six other teams, where the top four will move on to the district championships in Macklin Nov. 2.

“The girls have worked well together this season. They are supportive of each other, which translates to great plays on the court,” says Gartner. She also added that she has seen great improvements in skills and communication over the season.
