KERROBERT - There is much history surrounding the name Heidt when it comes to provincial and national curling championships. Team Heidt, a team name long familiar in Saskatchewan curling news will be heading to another provincial men’s tankard upcoming in Whitewood, hoping to earn a spot to the Canadian men’s curling championship known as the Brier.
Josh Heidt of Kerrobert is skipping a team that will compete at the Saskatchewan championship with hopes of earning an elusive green jacket. Josh will lead a team along with brother, Drew Heidt at third, Matt Lang playing second and Tyler Gamble at lead, coached by Mark Lang.
Dad, Brad Heidt, has had a storied history in Saskatchewan curling winning two provincial championships (1982,1995) and earning a Brier silver medal after being defeated by Manitoba’s Kerry Burtyuk in 1995. He has won numerous World Curling Tour events and is a former provincial mixed champion and provincial senior men’s champion.
Josh will be competing in his eighth tankard this year, that started in 2013 and had a five-year run from 2015-2019, earning another spot in 2022.
Drew will be competing at his seventh Tankard event. 2022 is the first year the brothers duo have played together as they have usually skipped separate teams. The Heidt brothers have been curling competitively since high school.
Drew was the 2003 Canada Winter Games champion, 2006 Sask. Men’s Provincial Junior champion, 2008 Sask. Mixed Provincial Championship and represented Canada at the 2008 World University Games in Turino, Italy.
Josh represented Saskatchewan at the 2007 Canada Winter Games and has won two world curling tour spiels, on top of his multiple provincial championship appearances.
The team is rounded out by players who also have competetive curling history as Lang was a fifth at the Brier in 2014. He was the 2010 and 2011 Sask. Junior Men’s Provincial Championship and in 2011, he and his team went on to represent Canada at the World Junior Curling Championship after winning nationals.
Gamble is married to Christie Gamble who is headed to the Scotties with Team Penny Barker. He represented McGill at the 2008 University Nationals and Dalhousie at the 2013 University Nationals. He also represented Nova Scotia at the 2017 Mixed Nationals championship.
Local curling fans will be cheering for Team Heidt to hurry hard hoping to see another Team Heidt at a Canadian championship. Curling fans can follow updates from the event on the website www.curlsask.ca
