Inaugural year of the SJFHL includes players from Kerrobert, Marsden and Plenty who have been selected for the Western Prairie Klippers

KERROBERT — Hockey Sask. Announced in 2022 that it was initiating a junior A league for female players in the province. The launch of the new Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League begins Oct.1.

Teams that are part of the six-team league include Lumsden Lynx, Outlook Mainline Ice Hawks, Regina Rebels, Southwest Impact, Saskatoon Prairie Blaze and Western Prairie Junior Klippers.

Western Prairie Junior Klippers have announced Bree Halter of Kerrobert is a defence player on the 2023-24 roster, while Laiken Swan from Plenty was chosen as a forward. Marsden will also be represented by Ashtyn Laclare. The remainder of players come from around the province.

When Kindersley was announced as one of the locations, The Western Prairie Junior Klippers were created.

The U22 Western Prairie Jr. Klippers are a sister team to the Kindersley Jr. Klippers male team playing in the Sask. Junior Hockey League out of Kindersley.

“With the introduction of the Provincial Female Junior Hockey League, graduating under-18 (U18) female players in Saskatchewan will have more opportunities to continue their hockey careers at a high level and pursue their dreams of playing at the university level,” a Hockey Sask. releases states.

“We are super excited to be able to expand the female hockey programs in west central Saskatchewan,” Mike Cullen, president Western Prairie Junior Klippers, tells the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca.

“Our board and coaching staff have volunteered hours of work getting this team organized and ready for the inaugural season in the new SFJHL League.”

Cullen said they appreciate their players' commitment in time and athletic abilities to help start this league so that future players will have the opportunity to continue their hockey careers beyond minor hockey programs.

“The Western Prairie organization has done an amazing job in west central Saskatchewan to develop players from the U7 to U18 age groups and now we will have the ability to continue that work till the age of 22,” adds Cullen.

The SJFHL Klippers will play their home opener Oct. 15 In Kindersley, hosting Lumsdon Lynx. You can follow the league and schedule at https://www.sjfhl.com. The team will also be updating their social media with game stories and season schedules.
