KERROBERT ‑ The Kerrobert Recreation Board plans to meet in March to finalize plans for spring and summer facilities and programming.
The function of the Kerrobert Recreation Board is to manage and operate the Memorial Arena, the community’s swimming pool, the fairgrounds, the parks and Prairieland Community Centre, as well as the programs held at each venue.
The board advises council on projects to improve or extend facilities and programs as well as being responsible for the management of operation of new facilities and programs and to manage/operate committees who join the board.
The board consists of nine members that include a curling rink representative, a representative from the RMs of Oakdale, Mariposa and Progress as well as representatives from the arena, fairground, PCC, swimming and town of Kerrobert. Meetings are held monthly throughout the year.
Currently, the Kerrobert Memorial Arena is at the season’s peak with hockey teams in playoffs, and tournaments and bonspiels on the go. The board was thankful for the Kerrobert Composite School holding their division two curling bonspiel at the rink, which was a great day full of smiles from participants and fans. An event like this generated $350 for the curling rink through booth sales. Another arena highlight was honouring longtime SWHL player and Kerrobert Tiger, Tyson Wuttunee, on his retirement at his last home game played. His banner now hangsin the arena.
The board expresses their gratitude to the community who supported the funding drive to get a new Zamboni in action at the rink this season.
While the fairgrounds committee has not met yet in 2022, their plan remains on task to complete diamond three levelling and spreading of shale. There will also be another load of shale purchased to share among the three diamonds. Kerrobert Minor ball has registration information out and look forward to another near-normal season for players. Several success stories at the provincial level came from Kerrobert players in 2021. At present, Kerrobert Rodeo is booked for July 9-10. A great season at the fairgrounds is anticipated for 2022.
The swimming pool had a great season last summer and the board plans to open again in June. There is minimal work to be completed, including painting the paddling pool and inside fence, as well as repairs on pumps. Pool staff will begin in May completing these projects. The town is currently accepting applications for summer students for the park program, pool, museum and park positions. With the hot weather experienced last summer, the pool was a most welcome and refreshing option for residents.
Bobbi Hebron, Kerrobert’s recreation director, says, “It is our hope to have enough lifeguards to offer regular hours and perhaps even school swimming lessons in June.”
