The switch to monthly utility billing will cause some changes for landlords in Unity.

UNITY – The Town of Unity has a new bylaw coming into effect Oct. 1 which may affect some landlords in the community.

A letter was issued to all landlords explaining the new Utility Management Bylaw, which requires all utility accounts to be under the name of the property owner by Oct. 1. Current renters who have the utility account in their names will be grandfathered into the new system and will not be affected at this time. However, once a current renter vacates the property, the utility account will be moved to the property owner’s name going forward.

If the utility account is currently under the property owner’s name, the change will not affect them.

These changes to the utility accounts are in part due to the Town of Unity switching from quarterly billing cycles to monthly. With the change, the town is also hoping more residents will sign up for the customer portal to help alleviate the added cost of paper billing. For residents who decided to forego online access will be subject to a $2 printing fee once the monthly billing starts.

The last quarterly bill will be sent out at the end of September and the first monthly bill will be sent out at the end of October. Bills will be due on the 30th of each month, with the exception of February.

If you require any assistance in becoming a customer portal user or have any additional questions about the upcoming changes, feel free to contact the Town Office at [email protected] or by calling 306-228-2621.
