UNITY — Sitting in an extreme cold warning on a blustery Boxing Day in Unity, residents were faced with another challenge when the power went out in town around midnight.
SaskPower reported crews were dispatched at 12:02 a.m. to determine the cause and repair time for the outage. At 1:42 a.m. SaskPower noted that the cause was due to a downed line and the estimated time of repair would be around 3:30 a.m. By 3:45 a.m., SaskPower reported repairs had been made and power had been restored.
Some residents reported flickering lights just prior to this outage while others said their homes went instantly dark. Some residents took to social media to express their concerns about an outage in such frigid conditions, while others praised SaskPower employees for working to restore power as quickly as possible.
The outage is a good reminder to ensure your home and your family are emergency prepared. Have flashlights with extra batteries on hand, ensure portable charging devices are full. If you have a generator or other alternative heating supply, ensure they are working. Make sure you have extra water on hand for drinking and to help with handwashing and toilet flushing.
During the outage it is suggested to use flashlights instead of candles as much as possible. Never run generators indoors as carbon monoxide can cause harm. It is also recommended to close doors of unused rooms to keep heat in limited space needed for occupants during the outage. Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from surges when power is restored.
After the outage, be sure to replenish whatever emergency supplies that have been used.
