UNITY - Both the Kerrobert Rebels and Unity Warriors won their way to SHSAA provincial quarter-finals. However, neither team was able to advance after losing out in this first round of provincial high school football playoffs.
Kerrobert headed to Plenty Oct. 30 while Unity kicked off in Clavet the same day.
Kerrobert’s 44-14 loss to Plenty was a tough one for graduating players as they know their high school football days are now over. As of press time, the Pres-Herald/SASKTODAY had not heard back from Coach Snider on their season.
The Warriors knew they were in for a battle with provincial powerhouse, Clavet, who hold several provincial titles. As well, the Warrior lineup was missing some key players due to injuries. The Warriors were defeated 69-35 and six graduating players saw their last high school football action. Both Ashton Fauth and Xander Tiffin have been four-year players and they will be missed on the field. Braden Ward, Aiden Rewerts and quarterback, Braedon Coons are the other graduating players.
Coach Clark said, “We had a good battle with one of the best six-man teams in the province. It was a strong finish to a great year, finished the season with a 5-3 record."
Both the Unity Warriors and Kerrobert Rebels have former players succeeding on the gridiron with Prairie Junior Footbal. Jacob Ambros is with the Saskatoon Hilltops, set for semifinals Nov. 6 and former Warrior quarterback, Zenon Orobko, is with the undefeated Regina Thunder who earned a bye to the semifinal and will square off against the Winnipeg Rifles Nov. 6.
Seeing former teammates and team members go on to play competitively past high school is an inspiration and an incentive for players who may have a goal like this in mind. Seeing these alumni players succeed in a 12-man game demonstrates the transition from six-man football is achievable.
Once the sting of this first-round exit wears off, players can reflect on their success this season and returning players can see how they can build their team for next season.
