Small town golf gems set for spotlight

Local golf enthusiasts say golf is their passion and Sask. is their playground as they set to share their experiences on most underratd golf courses in the province with new project, Grid Road Golf

UNITY — No ifs, ands or putts about it, a brand-new golf project began with two guys and their golf clubs and a love of the game. It was the start of a beautiful friend-chip. Grid Road Golf aims to showcase small-town courses.

Unity’s Cory Wildeman and Wilkie’s Devan Bertoia have been friends and golf buddies since they were young. They say while university and college put their golf days on hold, they both landed in Unity and Wilkie and they reconnected on the golf course.

“Grid Road Golf was born while we were golfing in Unity,” Bertoia says.

“We were discussing how beautiful the course in Unity was this year and how not many people probably even know the course exists. We decided to start a page dedicated to showcasing small-town courses.”

While the concept is described by the duo as a project, curiosity seekers are asking if the intention is to grow a business and a following.

The duo responds, “We want to keep all doors open. We are eager to create a strong following and will wait to see what happens after that.”

The men behind Grid Road Golf say they have created a source for golfers to tune into, as well as having internal discussions regarding apparel, and that is something they hope to add in the future.

“Once we create a strong following, we will begin to entertain the idea of ‘buy-in’ type promotion for golf courses,” adds Bertoia.

Bertoia says what they want is to provide an audience for small-town courses.

“If it grows to a point where these courses are reaching out to us for promotion, that would be a wonderful partnership.”

“At this point, our goal is to just travel around and play some small local courses when we can,” says Wildeman.

“Our families will always come first and at this point, we are still just in the stage of seeing what the appetite is for this type of promotion and content.”

“We are so fresh, so it's hard to pinpoint where this project is headed. As of right now, we are just getting the Grid Road Golf name out there on socials and trying to build a community around local/small-town golf.”

Grid Road Golf has locked down its logo and name on all socials and domains. As they grow, they will keep the idea of a trademark open. They are accessible through Instagram and Facebook as well as [email protected].

Their tagline on social media says, “Golf is our passion, Sask. is our playground. Sharing experiences on the most underrated courses in the province.” With the hashtag #golfsmall, they hope to appeal to golf enthusiasts like themselves.
