The province of Saskatchewan is seeing many elections happening over the course of a few weeks. The provincial election is coming to an end on Monday, where we may or may not have a new premier and many communities are soon holding civic elections. I am not here to talk about who you should vote for, but about how important it is to get out to vote.
For the past four days, registered voters have had the opportunity to cast their votes at the advance polls. This initiative was brought forth in hopes everyone has the chance to vote at some point. Having an opportunity such as this alleviates the added stress for those who work long hours. But there are still lots of individuals who do not make their way to the polls.
The year I turned 18 was also the same year a federal election was being held. With me being a teen and only worrying about my homework and extra-curricular activities, I had made a comment to my parents about not caring about the election. My dad asked me why I would say such a thing, to which I answered that I have no idea what the parties stood for or how some of the issues affect me.
“If you don’t vote, then you do not get to complain about the government.”
Those were the words that made me pay attention. As my dad further explained, by casting my vote I am voicing my opinion on who I would like to see run for the position, whether it is mayor, premier or prime minister. If I choose not to vote, then I do not get to talk about how the government is being run.
Now, I do not consider myself a feminist, however I do support many of the issues they have fought for, including the right to vote. In fact, women were allowed to vote provincially in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba two years prior to voting in federal elections. By not going to the voting polls, I feel the women who fought so hard for the right to vote would be insulted. We thank those who fought in wars for their service, so why not the ladies who lead the suffrage movement.
So, I ask you all to take a moment to reflect on what is important to you and your family. Listen to all the candidates, their platforms and get yourself acquainted with what aligns with your beliefs and values. Once you have the ideal candidate in mind, go cast your vote. I know I will.
