U15 Panthers host eight-team tournament, Unity & Macklin meet in final

U15 softball tournament in Unity sees neighbouring communities compete for top place.

The U15 Panthers, coached by Scott Purcell, and assisted by Kevin Scherr, Amanda Lewis and Skye Braun, invited seven other softball teams to play June 1, 2 and 3. Teams came from neighbouring Macklin and from as far away as Indian Head.

The Unity girls’ bats were hot in the round robin, beating Melfort 15-4 and the North Battleford Keller team 15-1. Indian Head was a tougher match, and they lost that game 15-3 to end up second in their pool.

Macklin, meanwhile beat North East 12-1 and had a shutout against NB Miller, 15-0. They lost to the Biggar Nationals 13-7, to finish second in pool B. The Macklin girls’ U15 team is coached by Wade and Raelene Dean.

The two local teams battled hard in the semifinals, with Unity taking on the Nationals and Macklin playing against Indian Head. The hometown crowds had plenty to cheer about as Macklin won 12-8 over Indian Head and Unity beat Biggar 7-3.

The final was a close, tight championship game, but it was Macklin who ultimately prevailed, defeating host Unity 10-8.
