The U15AA Western Prairie Thunder girls’ hockey team are provincial champions, winning their final game of the season decisively 6-3 in Kindersley, March 23. The final series was played against the Regina Rebels and the girls won the first game in Regina the day before with a 5-2 score.
Enroute to the final, they shut out the Saskatoon Impact in both northern final games, 4-0 and 3-0.
The girls are coached by Marley Ervine, Amber Grolla, Blain Hilbig and John Calkins. Manager is Ashley Kampen. The team, based in Kindersley, includes Berkley Wuttunee, Danika Seversen and Brynley Neumeier of Kerrobert.
The U15A Western Prairie Thunderbolts played their first game of the provincial final in Unity, March 20, against the Moose Jaw Carpet One Mavericks. The Thunderbolts took a one-game lead in the best-of-three series with a 2-1 victory.
A goal by Taryn Pernitsky, with assists from Ayla Sperle and Chloe Dean, late in the first period gave WP a 1-0 lead. Moose Jaw tied it four minutes into the second.
Chloe, assisted by Ayla and by Alena Scholer, restored the Thunderbolts’ lead some six minutes later. The third period was scoreless. Ashlyn Brown tended goal for the Western Prairie girls.
The U13 Western Prairie Mohawks, playing in the B girls’ division, lost their first game to the Balcarres Barracudas 2-0 March 23 in Macklin. The winner of game two, or three depending on the result of game two, will be the provincial champions. Those last two games take place in Balcarres, March 30.
The U18 Macklin Mohawks, playing Wood River in the Sask Hockey D final, also still have their chance to bring home a provincial banner. The first game, played in Macklin, March 22, ended in a 7-7 tie. Game two, and three if necessary, will be played in Lafleche March 29. Good luck, Mohawks!
