UNITY--Another youth recreation program has begun in Unity as the Unity Soccer Club is fielding 16 teams for the 2022 season.
The season began May 2 and will continue to June 22.
Nicole Headrick, spokesperson for the soccer club, says, “We have 160 players registered this year and still have kids registering up to May 6. Unity Soccer Club will be fielding seven U5 teams; three U7 teams; two U9 teams; two U11 teams and one team each of U13 and a combined U15-17 team.”
The club benefits from the services of 25 volunteer coaches for the 16 teams that will be playing as part of the Unity Strikers soccer teams.
Unity’s Soccer Club has been invited to a tournament in Wainwright May 28 and another in Provost June 11.
There were many new purchases for the 2022 season that included two new nets, pylons, cones, pennies, straps for nets, a number of new soccer balls and some goalie gloves.
The club is hosting a barbecue and bake sale May 19 to help pay form some of the new equipment purchased and assist with season expenses.
Soccer offers children both physical and mental wellness benefits. The activity benefits children’s co-ordination, flexibility and cardiovascular health.
Canadian soccer has seen great success on the world stage that has inspired a growth in community programs. Games are free to watch and any of the Strikers teams would welcome fans at the field.
