Warriors: Victory on the field and for fight against breast cancer

Annual Friday Night Lights game helps raise awareness and cash for breast cancer research.

UNITY – The UCHS Warriors football team went head-to-head with the Biggar Blazers for the second time this season, hosting them for the annual Friday Night Lights game. The Warriors host the lights game each year, raising money for various charitable organizations. Players traded in their black and red jerseys for a more vibrant shade of pink, with proceeds of the evening being donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

There is a long-standing tradition at the lights game of recognizing the parents of graduating players. Nine players presented their parents with a bouquet of flowers as their names were announced by coach Kyle Clark.

The Warriors started off strong, scoring twice within the first quarter. The Blazers were unable to add any points to the board until the second quarter, scoring one touchdown with a good convert.

The Blazers were strong to hold back the Warriors, with well-played interceptions for both teams throughout the third quarter. It was in the last quarter where the Blazers pulled out everything they had to gain more points on the board.

With close to a minute left in the game, the Blazers managed to break through the defensive line of Warriors to score their second touchdown of the night, bringing the score to 14-13 for the Warriors.

Coaches called a time out prior to the convert kick, adding to the suspense of what the outcome could be. After the time out, players took their place on the field for the kick, where the pressure must have gotten to the Blazers as the ball never made it past the posts.

The Warriors finished the game by running the clock, securing the win 14-13.
