WILKIE ‑ Fulfilling seasons at the SaskCan Arena hockey and curling venues is being reported by Recreation Director Lori Fenrich.
She says there were full teams in hockey divisions and mask restrictions didn’t deter people from coming out and watching their favourite teams. The hockey tournaments were successful due to the hard work and dedication of the managers, coaches, parents, and fans, she adds.
There were some additions to the arena. In the mezzanine, Wilkie Minor Hockey with the help of Wade and Robin Bleier of WR Ventures and Bobby MacCuish of GrainsConnect built new equipment room for each division. Storage has always been an issue for the teams, but the new room has made it easier for the teams to keep track of equipment. Fenrich said the support of the clubs and businesses is important to make the arena more user friendly.
Another special addition to the lobby of the arena is a handcrafted plaque of the Wilkie Outlaw logo by Melanie Lehnert of JM Creations and Design. The plaque was auctioned off at an Outlaw playoff game as a fundraiser for Wilkie Minor Hockey, with the highest bidder Brock Harrison, longtime member of the Outlaws. Harrison and the team donated the plaque to the arena.
Now that spring is here, minor, and senior ball is getting started. There will be ball practice in the arena in April with games played at the Wilkie Regional Park, which is run by its own board.
Soccer is starting soon, with games at Norman Carter School and on the McLurg Football field. With the Canadian men’s soccer team win to get in the World Cup, the first time since 1985, there has been an increase in those wanting to learn and play the game, Frenrich says.
The Spring Trade Show will be held April 9, with the Volunteer Appreciation Supper April 26 at the community centre.

The plan is to open the swimming pool after the May long weekend. The staff is almost in place with the majority of last year's returning. Fenrich says, “Everyone is holding their breath waiting to see if everything will work in the old pool for another year.”
There is a great deal of excitement with Brad Johner and the Johner Boys concert June 11. Fenrich says, “This is going to be one of the biggest fundraisers so far to raise money for $2 million plus price tag for a new pool. It is so important that we get the support to make it a success. It is only by working together that the pool will be built. Fundraising never stops for this project.”
